Early Life

Gary Leonard Oldman was born on March 21, 1958. The son to a former cab driver and cleaning lady from London who were both working-class themselves, he is an accomplished singer and pianist that studied at Rose Bruford College of Speech & Drama in Kent, where he earned his BA before dropping out to work as a carpenter for six months or so after high school graduation. With no formal training outside the college, Gary’s first acting gig came about through sheer luck when manager Judith Jackson saw him playing piano one night while she is waiting with her date for another show across town.

Oldman was quickly becoming a household name in Glasgow during the 1980s. In 1982, he made his film debut with ‘Remembrance’ and starred in ‘Meantime’ the following year. He then starred alongside Tom Berenger for 1987’s Academy Award-winning ‘Saved,’ which proved to be a breakthrough as an actor.

In the new millennium, he appeared as “Sheldon Runyon,” a Republican congressman in the film titled ‘The Contender.’ This was released right before 2000, so who can say that his appearance on-screen during this period transformed him into an American icon of sorts for many years to come. He played Sirius Black in the Harry Potter series, which is noteworthy because Oldman and Radcliffe became very close friends while filming together at one point or another when they were working on these projects from 2004-2010, respectively.

Gary Oldman is one of Hollywood’s most versatile actors, spanning from the 1980s to the present day. He proved his versatility by playing various roles in Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy (2005-2012). In 2005 he played James Gordon for Batman Begins and reprised that role three years later for The Dark Knight. From 2009 to 2011, Gary starred as Scrooge Mcducken: A Christmas Carol where he was seen on stage opposite Reneé Zellweger in her Broadway debut, then went onto act alongside Luke Evans and Sarah Gadon in Red Riding Hood before starring as Eli – an ex-serviceman who believes God has given him instructions from Heaven –in Oscar-nominated film The Book of Eli.

Favourite Quotes from Gary Oldman

“I was quiet, a loner. I was one of those children where if you put me in the room and gave me some crayons and pencils, you wouldn’t hear from me for nine straight hours. And I always drew racing cars and rockets as well as planes which were all high-speed vehicles that would take away someone like myself.” Gary Oldman

One suggestion he offers for anyone in romance trouble is that it’s always possible to start over again with someone new if you are open-minded enough. ‘You have no idea how many people I know who got divorced but were Reliafterw Edwards because they had found themselves after the divorce or their partner did not want them anymore, which then gave way to such happiness on both sides really,’ Gary says.’ It’s like ‘I’m free”.
