Hikaru Nakamura was born on December 9th, 1968 to a Japanese father Shuchihi Nakamura and an American mother Carolyn Merrow in the city of Hirakata. His father was formerly employed as a public school teacher, while his mother’s career consisted primarily of classical training as a musician.
When he was two years old, his family moved to the United States of America. Unfortunately, when he was just three years old in 1990, his parents went their separate ways and divorced.
At the age of seven, Nakamura started playing chess; he was coached by his Sri-Lankan stepfather Sunil Weeramantry, a FIDE Master and Chess author.

In May 2009, he won the U.Ѕ Chess Championship. In July 2011, in Auguѕt, hе became thе 960 Wоrld Сhаmріоn сlаmріng Düsseldorf’s Rhein-Main Region (the largest chess tournament). The following year 2010 saw him playing for the United States at World Team Championships and winning a Gold medal as well as top 10 player ranking later that same week.
In 2011, at the Talas Steel Group Victory, he also began training with former world champion Garry Kasparov. Their first training took place in New York beginning January of that year but ended in December 2011.
In 2012, he won the third US Championship which brought him a lot of victories too. He participated in Reggio Emilia Tournament where he tied second and later on in May, won U.S Championship as well! Later at the Tal Memorial Moscow tournament, his team finished fifth out of eight teams with four wins to their name- all impressive achievements for this time champion!!
In 2013, he was ranked at the Third Tier FIDE rating in 2014 and Zurich Chess Challenge. In 2015, his ranking reached 2800; fourth place U.S Championship; second Grand Prix placement.
