Hamlin was an American politician who served two terms in the Illinois Senate and one term in the Illinois House of Representatives. He was born in 1800 in Wilkes County, Georgia.

His journey to the west began when he was a young boy after he accompanied his parents on a visit to Fort Dearborn. He later worked as a fur trader, opening a store in Peoria and establishing a branch in Mackinaw. Hamlin was the Peoria County manager in 1825, serving two terms. He was later named to another two-time term in 1830, although he abnegated before it was completed. Hamlin built a log cabin to serve as the first Peoria County Courthouse in March 1829.

It was a successful bank that was a pioneer in the field of savings banks.
