Sammy’s Career

After a successful junior season with the Tigers that saw him finish third in voting for the Biletnikoff Award (given annually to college football’s top wide receiver), Watkins decided to enter into this year’s NFL draft as a junior and was projected by many analysts to be one of the first ten players selected. As expected, Watkins ended up going fourth overall when the Buffalo Bills chose him, and he signed a four-year contract worth around $19.95 million with them on May 19 2014.

It took only five games for Watkins to break his foot in October of last year, which caused him to miss six weeks before returning in December after having surgery. However, this injury would hamper him all season as he would manage just 34 catches for 430 yards receiving and two touchdowns through 12 appearances (11 starts) while being limited by other injuries,

Including an ankle sprain that forced him out of a game against Miami where he had one catch for 11 yards playing 41 snaps or 65% of their offence during the game. Sammy’s best statistical output came late when he caught nine passes for 108 yards and a touchdown in Week 17 against the Indianapolis Colts.

At 21 years old, Watkins is still remarkably young for an NFL player as he won’t turn 22 until May of next year. However, it’s hard to imagine that when healthy, his potential can be fully reached with Buffalo if they don’t find anybody else to help out quarterback Tyrod Taylor who threw for just over three thousand yards this season.
