Tom Anderson’s net worth

Tom Anderson is an American entrepreneur who has a net worth of $60 million. Tom Anderson earned his fortune as the co-founder and president of Myspace, one of the first social networking websites that became wildly popular in 2003 with over 150 million users worldwide (consequently making him America’s most famous man on Earth). He now invests in other companies such as Uber because he believes “it will be hard for any company to challenge these guys.”

Early Life

Tom Anderson was born on November 8, 1970, in Escondido California. His father had one crazy idea after another and Tom grew up with a keen sense of entrepreneurship coupled with the skills of an expert hacker. In his sophomore year at San Pasqual High School, he used these talents to hack into Chase Manhattan Bank’s computer system under the pseudonym “Lord Flathead.” The FBI raid that followed did not result in criminal charges because he was only 14 years old but it set him back academically (he barely graduated) as well as emotionally; being put on probation is never easy! When coming out from behind bars post-high school graduation, Tom enrolled at UC Berkeley where studied English until graduating summa cum laude then took over singing lead vocals for the Berkeley-based band The Young Americans.

Career

Tom Anderson came to work on Myspace via the company eUniverse, which was founded by internet entrepreneur Brad Greenspan. In 2000, Tom and Chris DeWolfe were working at XDrive as copywriter/product testers when they met each other for the first time. The following year their not-so-successful digital storage company went bankrupt–but it seemed like fate because shortly after meeting in 2000 these two entrepreneurs cofounded ResponseBase: a direct marketing software service that would soon become one of Silicon Valley’s most successful startups before being acquired by Oracle Corporation nearly 10 years later in 2009 (for $1 billion).

Tom and Chris, the founders of ResponseBase, sold their company to eUniverse in late 2002. They were eager not only for a larger paycheck but also an opportunity to provide something that they knew would be more successful than what was currently on offer by Friendster: social networking sites. Weeks before Myspace’s launch date (which is widely accepted as being August 2003), Tom created his first account – which he called “Miyuki”. It took him two weeks with friends’ help putting it together until finally posting and inviting other people into this new world where you could link up with your online buddies from all over the globe; whether or not you actually met them face-to-face!

The idea behind Myspace came about after the 2002 launch of Friendster. Several people with Friendster accounts were employees at eUniverse. They quickly recognized that if they could emulate some popular features, then perhaps their social networking site would grow in popularity as well! The team set out to put together a website and launched it just one month later; by 2003, this new platform had already reached teenagers across America and was on its way up among other age groups too.

Anderson was the first person to create Myspace, a social network that grew in popularity quickly. It hit 16 million monthly users by 2005 and reached 200k new signups per day as of 2006 until it had become the most popular site for American teenagers. By 2008 Facebook took over its rank, with 1,600 employees who worked hard at improving their product while they were still on top.

News Corp Acquisition

As time goes on, it’s becoming increasingly difficult for Myspace to retain its user base. Back in 2006 when News Corp acquired the company, they did not realize how complicated the equity shareholder pool had become and was surprised by their findings upon further review of 10-K filings from the 2005-2006 period. Prior to this sale, there was a company called VantagePoint which invested $15 million into Myspace back in 2003 while Redpoint came along soon after with another investment of $15 million bringing them at 25% stake each among six founders comprising most importantly Tom Anderson and Chris DeWolfe who sold half their stakes respectively ($3 mil).

The founders of Myspace were originally looking to sell the company for $125 million. But when News Corp purchased it, they had already reached a valuation of 580 million dollars which was not enough because their stake would be limited to 125 million if that happened within the one-year time frame. This meant as soon as people acquired Myspace for 580million and Redpoint sold in less than 12 months later, then all six founders received 30m each; but DeWolfe and Anderson took 10milllion apiece leaving 20milillion left over to split among themselves four other co-founders who got 5million each. That means with two years worth of contracts from the news corp totalling up to 60m – meaning redpoint made 44500000.

Other Ventures

Anderson’s investments in Myspace and Facebook were enormously successful, so he retired from his career as a stand-up comedian. He mentions that Judd Apatow cast him to play himself for a cameo appearance on the film “Funny People,” which starred Adam Sandler, Seth Rogen, Leslie Mann.

Personal Life

Tom Anderson is a well-known user of other social media platforms, such as Reddit, Facebook, and Instagram. He’s also interested in photography and has said that his friend Trey Ratcliff helped him develop those skills. In an interview with Influencive, he shared “My passion for photography is what keeps me travelling.” Tom enjoys going to places like Myanmar or Thailand where he can take pictures of landscapes then enjoy them when back home in the United States (or wherever you’re from).
